How did Smithway come to be?

Smith Farms was founded in 1973 by GD and Janice Smith following the purchase of Arbor Acres Breeder farm (GD’s previous employer) in Fairview, NC just outside of Asheville. After establishing a hatching contract with Central Soyer in Monroe, NC – GD began tinkering with the idea of building a trailer that would protect the chicks better during the 3-hour haul than the buses that they were using. After many attempts and lessons learned a trailer was developed and after interest from other hatcheries Smithway was hatched and incorporated in 1980. With the involvement of the Smith’s 4 sons Tony, Rocky, Scott, and Rod both divisions of the Smith corporation expanded, and now today a third generation of Smiths are putting their elbow grease towards the tradition of hard work and continuous innovation.
